The group treated with a supplement of red yeast rice, policosanols, and artichoke leaf extracts exhibited a significant decrease in LDL-c, TC, and apo B in healthy subjects with moderate hypercholesterolemia. On the other hand, no effect was demonstrated on other lipid concentrations, and there was no alteration in liver and renal function markers and in the muscle breakdown. The gene discussed is APOB; the disease is familial hypercholesterolemia.
