It was found that the experimental animals (usually rats and mice) that were treated with MLD-STZ (usually at 40 mg/kg body weight once daily for five consecutive days) would develop insulitis and complex immune responses in the islets after a latent period of about five days after the last dose of STZ, and these changes were accompanied by hyperglycemia and markedly reduced insulin biosynthesis and secretion from islet β-cells [21,22,24,44,45,46].
