SHH and peripheral arterial disease: It has been proposed that the elevated levels of endothelial EVs co-expressing the monomeric form of C-reactive protein (CRP) might potentially contribute to inflammation in PAD (Crawford et al., 2016), while endothelial cell derived EVs rich in the pro-angiogenic Sonic hedgehog protein correlated with the number of collateral vessels in ischemic thighs of PAD patients, suggesting their possible role in neovascularization (Giarretta et al., 2018).
