In heart failure, mishandling of myocyte Ca2+ can occur through several mechanisms: decreased Ca2+ uptake by SR Ca2+ ATPase (SERCA), increased Ca2+ leak from the SR and increased activity of the Na+/ Ca2+ exchanger (NCX1), all reducing SR Ca2+ content 6, or lack of synchronicity due to orphaned RyRs 7. This evidence concerns the gene SLC8A1 and heart failure.
