Daily consumption of flavonoid-rich dark chocolate was shown to improve fasting plasma glucose levels and insulin resistance to an extent three times greater than milk chocolate.8 The 15-day administration of polyphenol-rich dark chocolate was also shown to reduce blood pressure and increase insulin sensitivity in healthy participants.9 Similar results were observed after 4 weeks of consuming dark chocolate in participants with overweight and obesity.10 The health benefits of chocolate appear to be primarily driven by the polyphenol and cocoa content, which are greatest in dark chocolate. Here, INS is linked to obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
