ACE2 and infection: (ii) The ACE2-initiated SARS-CoV-2 infection induces inflammation and generation of cytokines released to the respiratory system and subsequently other parts of the body, which in turn trigger signals to activate RGD binding integrins on many cells especially those non-ACE2 cells, thus causing more entry and massive replication of the virus in various tissues and organs, which ultimately leads to the deterioration of the clinical status such as severe infection and multiorgan failure.
