TNF and major depressive disorder: Yoon et al. (2012) explored multiple cytokines in atypical depression and showed no difference in IL-6 and TNF-α compared to melancholic depression. Notably this was a relatively small sample (n = 105) of participants diagnosed with the SCID (Yoon et al., 2012). Findings between inflammation and atypical depression are not entirely consistent, with one study demonstrating atypical MDD was associated with increased hsCRP compared to melancholic combined atypical-melancholic and unspecified subtypes until the models controlled for covariates (Glaus et al., 2014).
