The main neuropathological hallmarks of PD are the loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the pars compacta of the substantia nigra (SNpc) and DA terminals in the striatum (3), along with the occurrence of neuronal (4, 5) and glial (6) cytoplasmic aggregations of the misfolded protein α-synuclein (α-syn). This evidence concerns the gene SNCG and Parkinson disease.
