Statins may provide protection in the CNS of progressive MS by inhibiting microglia activation, restraining pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, ROS, IFN- γ, COX-2, PGE2, and RNS, but also by promoting release of immunoregulatory cytokines such as IL-10 [319].
