While RCAN1 is a physiological inhibitor of NFAT, one of the main pathways involved in cardiac hypertrophy (Nakamura and Sadoshima, 2018), this molecule also participates in cardiomyocyte protection against I/R injury, probably through mitochondrial dynamic regulation (Parra et al., 2018). This evidence concerns the gene RCAN1 and cardiac hypertrophy.
