IFNA1 and Sepsis: Levels elevate sharply after severe trauma in two steps; early elevations of IFN-α/β and IFN-γ can be seen 24-72 hours after severe trauma and are correlated to early complications, whereas secondary elevations of IFN-α/β and IFN-γ after 7 days can be an index for opportunistic bacterial infections and sepsis, which are associated with late complications of severe trauma (86).
