Consistent with the evidence-based support for fruit and vegetable intake as an important factor influencing risk for dementia [16, 17], we found that consuming less than 5 servings of fruit and vegetable a day was associated with an increased risk of dementia in the following 10 years independently from the genetic propensity for this disease and the APOE-ε4 status. The gene discussed is APOE; the disease is dementia.
