In a prospective study with 30 healthy controls, 30 patients diagnosed with T2D but without DFUs and evident peripheral artery disease (PAD) as the diabetic control group and 31 patients diagnosed with T2D with DFUs at Wagner stage 2–4, serum Galectin-3 levels together with VEGF-A were significantly higher in T2D with DFUs compared with the other two groups, indicating as a defense mechanism against DFUs, thus contributing to wound healing [77].
