More recently, it has been observed that NMDA-R together with Il1b appear to be necessary to induce the CX3CR1-dependent microglial process convergence (MPC)—an increase in the interaction between microglia and neurons, especially in the dendrites and axons, that confers neuroprotective effects in chemically induced animal models of epilepsy, thereby decreasing seizure severity and cell death (Eyo et al. 2016, 2018). Here, IL1B is linked to epilepsy.
