Although several studies have proposed that C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT) and interleukin 6 (IL6) may be used for early identification of intrauterine infection [33,34], a recent systematic review of diagnostic test accuracy studies noted that there is insufficient evidence to support the use of these markers for diagnosing intrauterine infection in PPROM [35]. This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and preterm premature rupture of the membranes.
