In aneurysms, hypoxia and hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) stimulate inflammatory processes by the infiltration of macrophages, T cells and B cells, proinflammatory factor secretion, and upregulation of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) secretion by smooth muscle cells [8,9,10]. The gene discussed is HIF1A; the disease is aneurysm.
