SPTLC1 and hydrops fetalis: In the de novo biosynthesis of sphingolipids, we found that the serine palmitoyl transferases that catalyze the first step of this process, the condensation of serine and palmitoyl CoA to produce 3-ketodihydrosfingosine, were downregulated (SPTSSA: −1.46 ± 0.25, p = 0.022; SPTSSB: −2.46 ± 0.21, p = 0.035; SPTLC1: −1.52 ± 0.37, p = 0.049; SPTLC3: −1.60 ± 0.36, p = 0.031) and that transcription factor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha, which is a key regulator of lipid metabolism, was also downregulated (PPARA: −1.19 ± 0.17, p = 0.011) in HF tissues.
