When maintained on normal chow, DS/obese rats develop hypertension as well as left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy, fibrosis, and diastolic dysfunction, changes that are accompanied by increased levels of oxidative stress and inflammation (Murase, Hattori, Ohtake, Abe, et al., 2012) as well as of Akt activity (Uchinaka et al., 2018) in the heart.
