PTEN negatively regulates PI3Kα and PI3Kγ isoforms in both cardiac myocytes and endothelial cells (Oudit et al., 2004), and PTEN deficiency in the mouse heart increases phosphorylation of Akt, glycogen synthase kinase‐3β, and p70 S6 kinase and thereby leads to cardiac hypertrophy and impairment of cardiac contractility. The gene discussed is PTEN; the disease is cardiac hypertrophy.
