Eculizumab is a humanized mAb with a high affinity to C5 that inhibits the generation of C5a and C5b proteins and prevents the formation of the inflammatory anaphylatoxin and the MAC [150]. In addition, avdoralimab and vilobelimab are mAbs targeting C5aR or C5a that prevent binding of C5a to C5aR and block the formation of the inflammatory anaphylatoxin associated with pulmonary pathology of ARDS in COVID-19 [145, 151]. The gene discussed is C5; the disease is acute respiratory distress syndrome.
