Owing to their constitutive tyrosine kinase activity, Abl oncoproteins (Bcr-Abl, v-Abl) activate a variety of signaling pathways associated with cell survival and proliferation, such as PI3K/AKT (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B) and JAK/STAT (Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription), resulting in uncontrolled cell survival and proliferation, and the development of leukemia [4–6]. The gene discussed is AKT1; the disease is leukemia.
