Oxidative stress is a major factor contributing to the vulnerability of dopaminergic cells and beneficial effects of the induction of oxidative stress‐related genes towards PD are already described.[53] The induction of NQO1 gene expression of was shown to confer protection to dopaminergic neurons in both cell culture and animal models of PD.[54] The upregulation of NQO1 after 6 h of MPP+ lesion induced by the preincubation with circulating LMWPM, corroborates such observations. The gene discussed is NQO1; the disease is Parkinson disease.
