Among the direct targets of NIN, there are: RPG (RHIZOBIUM-DIRECTED POLAR GROWTH), NPL (NODULATION PECTATE LYASE1) and other genes involved in infection thread formation [6,36], the genes encoding the NF-YA1 and NF-YB1 (Nuclear Factor-Y A1 and B1) TFs which are essential for both infection and nodule primordia development [37,38], the CRE1 (CYTOKININ RESPONSE 1) gene encoding cytokinin receptor in M. truncatula [39], the LBD16 (LOB-DOMAIN PROTEIN 16) gene [40,41], as well as microRNA miR172c [42]. The gene discussed is NPL; the disease is infection.
