In a study involving meta-analysis of 47 in vivo studies on schizophrenia, treatment of patients with antipsychotic drugs resulted in a significant reduction in the patients' peripheral serum levels for IL-1β and IL-6 (20), indicating that antipsychotics exhibited anti-inflammatory effects, and thus could efficiently balance the high-level inflammatory state of schizophrenic patients. The gene discussed is IL6; the disease is schizophrenia.
