DAMs are characterized by downregulation of microglial homeostatic genes including purinergic receptors, CX3CR1 and Tmem119, and upregulation of genes related to phagocytosis and lipid metabolism as well as expression of many genes that are known AD risk factors including Apoe, Tyrobp, Ctsd, Lpl and TREM2. This evidence concerns the gene TREM2 and Alzheimer disease.
