During the progression of melanoma, CREB and ATF-1 show changes in their expression, along with the loss of the AP-2α transcription factor: indeed, CREB expression correlates directly with metastatic transformation [96], whereas ATF-1, which is absent in normal melanocytes, is then expressed in the metastatic melanoma cells [97].
