The Fanconi anemia pathway is activated by hypoxic stress (Scanlon and Glazer, 2014), which aligns with the upregulation of markers of hypoxic stress (eg, significant increase in the hypoxia-inducible factor-alpha [Hif1-a] gene in the crypt at high concentrations, and in the villus at nearly all concentrations of Cr(VI) (Supplementary Table 2). The gene discussed is HIF1A; the disease is Fanconi anemia.
