In human AMD donor eyes, we observed a higher number of hIL-33+ Müller cells and ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1) + myeloid cells in areas of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor atrophy as compared to unaffected adjacent tissues and control donor eyes [10]. Here, AIF1 is linked to age-related macular degeneration.
