PTH and Hypocalcemia: The low rates of permanent hypoparathyroidism can be attributed to the fact that postoperative parathyroid gland function mainly depends on the number of parathyroid glands remaining in situ after thyroidectomy.12The resultant hypocalcemia serves as a trigger for the remaining parathyroid glands to maintain the serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) values within the normal range.13Wide variation in the incidence of hypocalcemia across different studies may be attributed to the surgeons' experience, surgical techniques, and the annual volume of thyroidectomies at a particular center.
