Several SGLT2 inhibitors have been approved for the treatment of T2DM, and it has been reported that the SGLT2‐specific inhibitors empagliflozin (Wanner et al., 2016) and canagliflozin (Perkovic et al., 2018) are associated with slower progression of kidney disease, suggesting a possible renoprotective effect in T2DM. Here, SLC5A2 is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
