ACE2 and infection: The SARS-CoV-2 genome consists of a single positive-sense RNA strand (29.8 kb–29.9 kb) that encodes three external structural proteins: the membrane, the envelope and spike proteins [3], of which the spike protein is responsible for initiating the infection by binding to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors on the cell membrane, thus initiating the process which allows the virus to enter the cell [4].
