Lastly, Coulouarn et al. showed that the crosstalk between CAFs and HCC cells leads to an upregulation of pro-fibrogenic and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL1β, IL6, and IL8), acute phase proteins (CP and SAA1), and growth factors (AREG and EREG), indicating that this crosstalk promotes a pro-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic TME, which might lead to enhanced migratory capacity of the HCC cells [61]. This evidence concerns the gene EREG and hepatocellular carcinoma.
