The mechanisms of several biomarkers, including kidney injury molecule-1 (Kim-1) [3,4], matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP7) [5], neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) [6], and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2/insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 7 (TIMP2/IGFBP7), in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic kidney diseases have been elucidated [7,8]. This evidence concerns the gene LCN2 and chronic kidney disease.
