HD patients also display chronically elevated circulating concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g. interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)) (Rysz et al. 2006) and reduced circulating concentrations of anti-inflammatory cytokines (e.g. IL-10) (Zhang et al. 2010).
