Recently, a GWAS and 2 GWAS meta-analyses independently found SNPs at the inhibitory immune receptor gene sialic acid–binding Ig-like lectin 5 (SIGLEC5) to be associated at a genome-wide significance level (P < 5 × 10-8) with early-onset generalized stage III, grade C periodontitis (Munz et al. 2017) and more moderate late-onset forms (Munz et al. 2019; Shungin et al. 2019). Here, SIGLEC5 is linked to periodontitis.
