However, acidosis-induced secretome from MSC in the same areas does trigger the release of inflammatory mediators and NF-kB activation: in the subcutaneous model, we found a clear correlation between expression levels of V-ATPase, a protein largely involved in tumour acidifying activity that pumps excess protons out of the cell, and IL6 expression levels, indirectly suggesting that a large amount of the IL6 released into the TME is produced by MSC.
