Despite the similarity in RBD of the S protein of SARS-CoV-2 and pangolin coronaviruses, currently available data, particularly the pattern and extent of the genome sequence differences, could not provide unequivocal evidence to support the hypothesis of pangolins being the transitional host for SARS-CoV-2 [27]. Moreover, pangolins are solitary animals with a small population size, which doesn’t seem to support precise infection dynamics to acquire polybasic cleavage sites and develop mutations in the spike protein needed for the spillover to the human host. This evidence concerns the gene PROS1 and infection.
