In the present study we found increased IL-6 concentrations in patients with significant fibrosis as evidenced by fibroscan scores which supports the results of previous studies that found higher IL-6 concentrations in NAFLD patients with advanced histological disease [32] as well as showing that sustained exposure to IL-6 sensitises the liver to injury and promotes apoptosis [37]. This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
