IFIH1 and COVID-19: SARS-CoV-2 infection can trigger a robust innate immune response in vitro through activation of the cytoplasmic RNA sensors, RIG-I and MDA5 [67,68] and is highly sensitive to inhibition by IFN treatment, upregulation of ISGs has been observed in COVID-19 patient samples, and inborn errors in the IFN system are associated with severe COVID-19 [69–74].
