Together, these findings suggest that the presence of the polybasic furin cleavage site in SARS-CoV-2 Spike may have driven the co-option of cell surface TMPRSS enzymes to evade the detrimental effects of endosomal restriction factors as well as endo-lysosomal acidification (including its amplification by factors such as NCOA7) on viral infection.
