During ischemia, cardiomyocytes accumulate H+ that activate isoform 1 of Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE1) and the Na+/HCO3‐ (NBC) symporter and lead to an increased intracellular Na+ concentration (Garciarena et al., 2013; Vaughan‐Jones et al., 2006). This evidence concerns the gene SLC9A1 and ischemia.
