During ischemia, the increased generation of H+ (fall in intracellular pH) leads to the activation of Na+‐H+ exchanger isoform 1 (NHE1) and Na+‐HCO3‐ co‐transport (NBC) as alkalinizing mechanisms that result in an increased intracellular Na+ concentration (Vaughan‐Jones et al., 2009).
