Interestingly, knockdown of PD-1/PD-L1 does not induce diabetes in other strains of mice such as C57BL/6, but instead induce lupus like disease and autoimmune cardiomyopathy, suggesting that PD-1/PD-L1 is not the only factor required to maintain islet tolerance and the relative importance of PD-1 may vary across both target organ and species (73, 74).
