Several models of CKD were used to study the efficacy and action of mechanisms of Salvia miltiorrhiza. In the five-sixth nephrectomy model (Zhang, et al., 2019b) (Zhang, et al., 2019a) (Zhang, et al., 2018) (Wang, et al., 2015b), administration of Salvianolic acid A (SAA) and Tanshinone IIA were shown to attenuate oxidative stress and inflammation by activating the Akt/GSK-3beta/Nrf2 signaling pathway and up-regulation of bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP-7) and Smad6 as well as inhibiting NF-κB and p38 MAPK and TGF-β/Smad signaling pathways. Here, BMP7 is linked to chronic kidney disease.
