Yan et al. (2010) reported that annexin A3 was significantly enriched in Pt-resistant ovarian cancer cell lines, where it reduced the concentration of intracellular Pt-based drugs and prevented cancer cell apoptosis. Further studies showed that upregulation of annexin A3 in cancer cells led to the formation and release of multivesicular body vesicles. Western blotting and immunoelectron microscopy further confirmed the presence of annexin A3 in exosomes, suggesting that the latter transferred annexin A3 between cells to induce chemoresistance (Yan et al., 2010). The gene discussed is ANXA3; the disease is ovarian cancer.
