Analysis of albumin and other serum-derived proteins in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and measurements of albumin CSF/serum quotient (Qalb) have indicated both a compromised BBB in living ALS patients and an increased Qalb in 40% of individuals (Brettschneider et al., 2006; Winkler et al., 2013). This evidence concerns the gene ALB and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
