The contradictory evidence for the function of caveolin-1 in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is that although caveolin-1 expression decreased in cells in the area of the atherosclerotic lesion during its progression [191,192,193,194,195], caveolin-1 deficiency reduces the development of atherosclerosis despite an increase in plasma lipid levels [196,197,198].
