FTO and cancer: Single nucleotide polymorphismsin an intron of the fto gene were reported to beassociated with body weight and type II diabetes in genome-wide associationstudies.4,5 More recent studies have reported rolesfor FTO in m6A regulation and cancers, including acutemyeloid leukemia and glioblastoma.6−11 Precisely how RNA oxidation by FTO is linked to disease is uncertain. There is thus an unmet need to develop small-molecule probes to complementgenetic studies and explore its potential as a therapeutic target.
