The canonical Mtb virulence factors phthiocerol dimycocerosate (PDIM) and ESX-1 contribute to disruption of the macrophage phagosomal membrane upon infection (Augenstreich et al., 2017; Barczak et al., 2017; Manzanillo et al., 2012; Quigley et al., 2017; Simeone et al., 2012); we sought to leverage this shared pathogenic effect to gain insight into compartment-specific signaling in the macrophage response to Mtb.
