MMP9 and HIV infectious disease: Among MMPs, MMP-9 playsa crucial role in viral dissemination,sanctuary consolidation, tissue damage, and the development and progressionof neuroAIDS.23,25 Elevated MMP-9 levels have beendetected in serum and cerebrospinal fluid from patients with HIV-relatedneurological diseases and HIV-positive patients.26−28 Several ex vivo and in vitro studies have demonstratedthat MMPs can represent an important therapeutic target in courseof HIV infection.
