Olsen and Singhrao (2016) and Olsen and Yilmaz (2016) reviewed the plausible contribution of specific bacteria playing a role in influencing the activity of the NLRP3 inflammasome in AD progression. P. gingivalis was found to have several mechanisms for modulating innate immunity by limiting the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Among them, ATP-/P2X7-signaling is associated not only with periodontitis but also with the development of several systemic diseases, including AD. Here, P2RX7 is linked to Alzheimer disease.
