The neuropathology of AD is characterized by an abnormal build-up of extracellular amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide as neuritic plaques, pathological extracellular aggregates formed around a core of Aβ and are a hallmark of AD (Stratmann et al., 2016), accompanied by intracellular hyperphosphorylated (p)-Tau fibrils which accumulate as neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) within neurons (Stratmann et al., 2016). This evidence concerns the gene MAPT and Alzheimer disease.
