Despite the many efforts and a great number of clinical trials, only 5 drugs have been approved for the treatment of AD (i.e., 4 cholinesterase inhibitors and a N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist with neuroprotective properties), and these are mostly symptomatic drugs that do not tackle the etiology of the disease [17]. This evidence concerns the gene BCHE and Alzheimer disease.
